Three leading cultural and literary figures will be descending on Manchester on Friday to try and shed light on a painful topic that is close to their collective heart - namely suicide.
Bragg and Roche Author Martin Amis, broadcaster and writer Melvyn Bragg and poet Al Alvarez will be at the University of Manchester - where Amis is a professor of creative writing - at 6.30pm to stage the discussion 'Literature and Suicide'.This will see Amis revisiting a recurrent theme in his popular novels, Alvarez talking of the death of his close friend Sylvia Plath and Bragg tackling the difficult subject of the death of his first wife, Lisa Roche. Roche, unbeknown to Bragg, had a history of suicide attempts and killed herself when she was 31, ten years into their marriage, by jumping from a window. In 1998 Bragg spoke about the event to The Guardian, telling the paper: "I could have done things which helped and I did things which harmed. "So yes, I feel guilt, I feel remorse." The session will be followed by questions and answers from the audience and a MP3 recording of the debate will be made available. www.manchester.ac.uk
