Research produced by MasterCard, an official sponsor of the Champions League, suggests that MUFC will earn ultimately over £85m from its triumph in Moscow last week.
Made in London, bottled in Moscow
Chelsea will pick up around £30m the credit card company believes.
The research was undertaken for MasterCard by Simon Chadwick, director of Coventry University's centre of the international business of sport. The calculations include prize money, sponsorship deals, television rights and growth in season ticket sales. How he managed to factor in the latter will no doubt prompt some head-scratching among those tens of thousands on Utd’s waiting list for tickets.
Prof Chadwick’s research also suggests that the figure has grown considerably from last year’s final in Athens which was worth £67m.
The study also forecasts that Manchester itself may benefit to the tune of £10m as a consequence of increased business investment and tourism.
