Property isn’t theft – Own-It North launches to help creatives with IP issues | Print |  Email to a friend
Wednesday, 16 April 2008
A new free scheme to help creatives gets to grips with the nuances of intellectual property, and hence protect their valuable ideas, is launching in the North West.

Own-it North is an offshoot of the hugely successful London-based Own-it intellectual property advisory service.

This was set up in 2004 to help advise creative businesses on how to protect and exploit their work, and currently boasts 14,500 members, with ten specialist IP law firms on hand to offer them free legal expertise.

A new free scheme to help creatives gets to grips with the nuances of intellectual property, and hence protect their valuable ideas, is launching in the North West.
The Northern arm of the operation is being funded by the NWDA and will be spearheaded by Salford University, Skillset North West and the Northern Edge group of Universities.

It will offer members free one-to-one sessions with lawyers, legal advice, templates of legal contracts and free entry to events that will aim to demystify the vagaries of the IP question.

The first two seminars have already been announced, looking at ‘Creativity and the law: Understanding Intellectual Property’ on 28 May and ‘How not to get ripped off: Enforcing & protecting your Intellectual Property rights’ on 24 June.

Both events will be held at Cube in Manchester, with legal advice provided by leading firm Pannone & Partners LLP. Entry is free and tickets can be obtained through the Own-it website.

Own-it project director Ron Cook, a Salford University's professor, said of the new scheme: "This development is evidence of the growing partnership between public agencies, the private sector and universities to deliver support to the North's creative businesses at a time of immense opportunity for the sector in the context of major developments such as Mediacity:uk."

Own-it North will service the regions of Manchester, Newcastle, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and Humber.

For those unable to attend the aforementioned (and future) events podcasts will be available to download at the organisation’s website.
