Royal Mail's pain is LinkDirect's gain | Print |  Email to a friend

Continued disruption of Royal Mail's services due to industrial disputes is not necessarily bad news for everyone.
Roxburgh sees uplift
The cloud of strikes, backlogged letters and the threats of further action are providing Birkenhead's LinkDirect with a silver lining in its pockets.

The door drop marketing firm claims that it has seen a 60% increase in enquiries since the disruption began, with a further boost expected next month if a planned national strike gets the nod from the mail union's 120,000 members.

"We've seen a 60% uplift in enquiries over the past fortnight alone, a decent proportion of which are already converting to sales," said the firm's MD Chris Roxburgh, adding: "we know this is due to the postal strikes because people are mentioning it on their enquiry form.

"We are getting the sense that many businesses have simply had enough and are no longer prepared to trust what has increasingly proved itself to be a wholly unreliable service.

"We're now into the autumn promotional period ahead of the Christmas sales and for many businesses this is the time that determines whether it's going to be a good or bad year. Businesses cannot risk the possibility that their promotional materials could end up gathering dust in a depot somewhere."

Business levels at the Royal Mail have reportedly dropped 10% year on year as a result of the disruption.

In my opinion, having items spend a few extra days in a Royal Mail depot is preferable to the possibility of finding those same items behind a hedge somewhere.
Most door-drop companies use distributors drawn from the same 'pool' of freelancers spread across the Country. So, whichever door-drop company you use, they will most likely be utilising the very same good, bad and indifferent individuals who have no particular sense of loyalty or accountability to that company.
Stick to Royal Mail I say. At least you know who you are dealing with!

The best way to guarantee delivery accountability is to choose a DMA member - go here www.dma.org.uk and find member companies - I did that - Royal Mail are there as well as Link Direct...

Naturally JohnD can only go on his own experience and it sounds as though he might have been unlucky. More often than not these tales of leaflets being found behind hedges etc are complete exaggerations of fact but no system is foolproof and the human element is always there. Our original point is not a criticism of the Royal Mail Door to Door service, it is an expression of frustration that once again there is uncertainty surrounding some vital direct marketing campaigns. No one is better than RMD2D in national coverage terms and as an agent of theirs we support them totally where they are a more appropriate media channel for clients of ours. Extensive strike action will cause much disruption though and the 'few extra days' in a depot could be an optimistic forecast. I would urge RMD2D users to have a Plan B to cover such an eventuality.
