The Fall, one of the most underrated, enigmatic and enduring of Manchester bands, is due to be the subject of an academic conference to be held by Salford University’s Communication, Cultural & Media Studies Research Centre.
In what the institution claims is a world first, Mark E Smith’s punk/pop combo will be discussed by a collection of musicians, respected academics, and the band’s tour promoter Alan Wise, as well as some shadowy ‘special guests’. E Smith: worthy of study Together they are aiming to examine subjects such as Smith’s working class roots and his legendary HR skills, which have seen a revolving door policy of myriad line-ups over the course of The Fall’s turbulent 30-year history. The organiser of the conference is Michael Goddard and he believes the band are well worthy of academic study. He explained: “While the Hacienda, The Smiths and Joy Division all get a lot of attention, The Fall are often overlooked. “There’s so much to dissect over the 30 years that this band has been going - politics, attitudes towards the working class, being from the north, and even how they’ve continued to channel modernism in different ways over three decades through music and artwork.” Speakers at the conference include Richard Witts from Edinburgh University, Paulo Oliveira from Portugal (who will be musing on how the England football team and HR managers can learn from Mark E Smith’s running of the band), and Paul Long from Birmingham University, who’ll be speaking about the influence of John Peel as the band’s leading champion. The conference takes place on 9 May, six days after the band plays at the University’s Maxwell Hall venue.
