The University of Salford has launched a new MA in social media.
The course starts in September and teaches students how to use existing social media outlets and create new ways of mobilising communities and campaigns to raise more money, lobby government and create community journalism.
Part of the course will be a community project, where students will work with real-life clients to create social media strategies.
“Social media is often associated with photos and statuses on Facebook,” said course leader Professor Ben Light.
“But there’s a massive potential for it to bring communities together, whether they’re geographical or online.
“We feel that social media can be a way of doing social good and by giving students the skills and experience to implement effective technology and strategies, we hope they’ll be able to make a difference.”
Light expects the majority of graduates to be looking for careers in public relations, marketing or community work:
"What we can say, is that knowledge of high quality production and communication techniques will enable people to create powerful campaigns – whether for commercial or social reasons.”
A launch night is being held at the Circle Club today with Prof Light, Dr Paul Taylor and Gary Copitch.

Implementing effective technology eh? Put a typical 'IT literate' body fresh from education in front of a computer and suggest that they do something other than Facebooking and they are fu**ed.
Is Jobcentre on Twitter?
OH. DEAR. GOD!!!!!!!!!!! This is going to teach them how to earn a living isn't it? What a con this course is - don't these people understand that the point of SN and SM is that it is intended to cut out the "suit" and the "professional". Mass media has been democratised - ordinary folks don't need some snake-oil salesman to "run" or "promote" things. PR folks - start retraining, the game's up!
