Figures compiled by accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers report that the volume of M&A activity in the media sector in 2007 hit a new record.
The number of deals rose in the UK to 75 last year. The total value of the deals was however hugely skewed by one transaction, Thomson’s £10bn takeover of Reuters.
PwC expects that the level of activity for 2008 will remain reasonably buoyant but the firm cautioned that the numbers last year were boosted by significant activity in the first half of 2007 with the second half seeing a fall-off in what in hindsight was a frantic pace of activity.
Despite talk of a global credit crunch and US recession, the firm expects continuing robust activity across Europe throughout 2008.
