The University of Salford has secured its place as the second anchor tenant at the huge new MediaCityUK development, after confirming that it has received a £8m grant to help it realise its ambitions of creating a specialist media education centre at the site.
The institution has been awarded the grant following on from a bid to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Strategic Development Fund and is now looking to create a 103,000sq ft facility over four floors. An attractive site for Salford This is set to boast 'zones' dedicated to broadcast and digital media, as well as a virtual laboratory, a digital performance space and a variety of 'creative spaces for use in academic teaching, project-based learning and user-centred design and innovation'.Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Harloe said of the university's plans: “Our presence at MediaCityUK is an unprecedented opportunity for students and staff at the University to work with industry partners and to develop new avenues in the delivery of learning and the conduct of research." He added: "We are confident that the new facility will secure major benefits for the University, and will lead to an increase in both part-time and full-time students, as well as securing further enterprise, employer engagement and external research income for years to come." The move helps add further momentum to a development that has been primarily known for its (often controversial) success in luring five BBC departments away from the capital. Of the £8m awarded to the university, £6m of the grant will be used to assist in funding construction and IT costs, while the remaining £2m will contribute to the purchase of specialist and technical equipment.
