The group of filmmakers and writers behind the Liverpool Counter Culture movement have released an avant-garde (and, taking ‘Stan Boardman’ into mind, slightly un-nerving) video of their very own “delayed and apathetic knee jerk reaction to Liverpool’s Capital of Culture opening night party.”
The alternative LCC was set up as a response to what the group saw as the disappointingly mainstream fayre offered and represented by the city’s Capital of Culture programme.
Writer and filmmaker Steve Toner explained more to How-Do: “We realised that the 08 celebrations were about celebrating Liverpool culture and cultural regeneration, but, as usual in Liverpool, contemporary culture wasn’t really showcased, especially early on in the year, and they were fixated with the past.
“The Beatles were great, but it was a very long time ago and we felt that it was a missed opportunity to engage the public with the great stuff that is happening now below the mainstream of the city.
He continued: “Liverpool can be a difficult place for filmmakers, musicians and other artists to get help when trying to do something different, this has been a problem well before 08, but this year highlighted it more so.”
In response to this perceived slight LCC decided to take matters into their own hands and take “a cheeky satirical poke at the 08 malarkey, and in particular the opening night celebrations.”
The fruits of their labours can be seen below.
The group have already achieved their main objective - “to have some fun and show that there are some very talented, lovely people… (who) love their art and being a part of something authentic” - but are also planning more comedy sketches in the near future.
Toner (and chief co-collaborators Paul Fred Kelly and Sacha Wyke) are currently distributing the video over web based channels
The gleefully oddball presenter in the piece is played by Reg Edwards.
Toner described him as “a little known gem from Liverpool, who is the most talented and intuitive actor we have ever worked with.”
