Virgin Trains is entering into the spirit of the forthcoming Manchester International Festival by theming an entire 217m train.
The train operator has commissioned designer Jamie Hewlett and graffiti artist Chu, to decorate nine carriages with over 90 images, based on the opera ‘Monkey: Journey to the West’.
Manchester International Festival opens on June 28 with the opera which has been conceived and directed by Chen Shi-Zheng, composed by Damon Albarn and designed by Jamie Hewlett. It will be performed in Mandarin and Hewlett has also designed the sets and costumes for the opera.
The train will run during the festival four times a day between London and Manchester.
