Wythenshawe goes to Cheshire with Creative Concern | Print |  Email to a friend
Wednesday, 24 June 2009

Creative Concern's campaign to alter perceptions of Wythenshawe took a new direction yesterday - heading into the leafy environs of Knutsford to make an impression at the Cheshire County Show.

The Wythenshawe: Real Lives initiative was launched last year in an effort to transform the views of internal and external audiences that may still consider the location to be 'Europe's largest council estate'.

Creative Concern's campaign to alter perceptions of Wythenshawe took a new direction yesterday - heading into the leafy environs of Knutsford to make an impression at the Cheshire County Show.
Real work: Ambassadors in action
It focuses on the experiences of residents, investors and employees of the area, using real life 'ambassadors' to communicate more realistic, positive messages about an area that has seen large-scale investment and regeneration.

Yesterday two of these ambassadors - Elaine Green and Brenda Grixty - took a stall at the show to talk to visitors about Wythenshawe’s green space and give away geraniums (home grown in 'Manchester's Garden City').

Cllr Eddie McCulley, who chairs Wythenshawe Area Consultative Committee, said it was an important move to communicate the green nature of the area.

He added: "We took that message to visitors at the Cheshire Show to make them aware of the positive assets in Wythenshawe. They also got the chance to take a piece of Wythenshawe home with them, with our plant giveaway.”

The initiative seemed to strike a chord with elements of the local media, scoring extensive coverage with the BBC.

Other upcoming activities in the long-term campaign include a gardening competition for schools and a VIP reception for stakeholders ahead of a performance of As You Like It by Heartbreak Productions in Wythenshawe Park.

What is the purpose of this campaign? Why do you want to improve the image of Wythenshawe within Cheshire, to generate business? In which case, why give flowers away to punters at a show?! This kind of quango activity beggars belief. Still, keeps us all in a job.....
