Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West.
With Liverpool’s year in the limelight upon us, Martin Chapman Fromm of Mando suggests some digital highlights to check out.
Even those of you up the M62 can’t escape the big news this week - the Liverpool Capital of Culture officially kicks off.
If you’re around and about the many events in the city, keep your eyes open for people taking advantage of BT’s wireless city status via their ‘iPod Touch’s, ‘iPhone’s, ‘Blackberry’s, etc.
Yes, this is the year the mobile Internet will provide events and organisations with increasingly ubiquitous opportunities to engage with audiences via digital means. Here’s a selection of what to expect from a digital Liverpool:
Liverpool 08 : providing various content via a range of podcasts including Liverpool music guide by Pete Wylie, a literary tour of Liverpool, the informative Liverpool slave trail and the awe-inspiring Liverpool world heritage trail.
Digital Departures A number of feature-length films for ‘08 with the aim to export Liverpool around the world via a variety of digital platforms, including the UK’s rapidly expanding Digital Screen Network.
High Hopes: connecting teens in Liverpool (non-EU Capital of Culture 2008) to teens of Stavanger, Norway (non-EU Capital of Culture 2008). Exploring their experiences of culture and living in these cities. Multimedia content will be shared between virtual communities who’ll design their own viewing experience.www.first-take.org www.sydvestfilm.no Open Culture: Phil Redmond leads a project seeking broader participation in Liverpool ‘08. An online portal at ICDC (International Centre for Digital Content) will collate and disseminate the projects activities as well as provide an exhibition space and cultural forum. Liverpool Open Source City: Liverpool can boast many creative uses of electricity from the birth of the power grid, companies such as Psygnosis and Ocean Software during the early computer games industry plus musical experimentation from Julian Cope and ZTT. This summit of innovative workshops builds upon this legacy as artists working with sound use open source software to explore the debate of intellectual property in the digital age. Made in Liverpool: Liverpool Biennial are hosting a competition for emerging film makers, to submit and show their work at venues including FACT, and BBC Big Screen, Clayton Square. www.biennial.com
