How-Do Weekly Wrap - 14 December 2007 - Rachael Tinniswood | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 14 December 2007

Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West.

The Wrap's editor this week is Rachael Tinniswood.

Everyone dreams of that once-in-a-lifetime moment when our luck comes in. When that elusive contract or story that we’ve all been after is wrapped up in festive paper and a bright red bow and delivered by carol singers direct to our door.

For most of us, that moment rarely ever comes. But Bell Pottinger’s Richard Clein is living proof that sometimes it really is worth sending that Christmas list off to Santa, after landing the representation contract for teddy bear teacher Gillian Gibbons this week.

As luck would have it, it turns out Richard used to work with her son, and was a ‘trusted’ friend. And what was one of his first jobs? Accompanying Gillian on a trip to New York where she was due to appear on ABC TV. Once in a lifetime these lucky breaks come along. Mr Clein, we salute you. You lucky b.

One potential client who could do with Clein’s services is PR week , which showed the sort of lack of brand awareness that usually pushes people to hire PR companies in the first place, when it described the Echo as “The Scousers’ answer to the Sun."

As a former Echo employee, I can’t imagine said Scousers could have been more insulted if Kelvin MacKenzie himself had turned up at Anfield singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. The Echo is nothing like the Sun. For a start, they have a bit of a policy there that might seem outdated to some – they publish news rather than clichés. It’s a concept both PR Week and the Sun might do well to adopt.

I see Michael Welch, the former chief executive of the NWDA funded Digital Industries North West didn’t turn up for his court appearance this week . Far be it from me to speculate as to why, but let’s just consider the situation. It’s less than two weeks to Christmas and he’s a man. A disappearing act suddenly doesn’t seem too out of character . . .

Rachael Tinniswood is a freelance writer. She was previously editor of Trinity’s website Liverpool.com. Her current clients include Place North West and Kenyon Fraser.
