Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West
The Wrap's guest editor this week is Andy Crane.
SOSimon Mayo doesn’t want to come North. As a some time radio presenter, I’m delighted that a national station is coming here but not at all surprised that its presenters (and other staff) are a little hesitant. This was always going be a problem. Imagine if the MEN moved to Edinburgh – would everybody just up sticks and go? Probably not. Relocating your entire life isn’t always possible. Mind you, it’s their loss and our gain. Manchester is full of media talent, and if a lack of displaced southerners means more jobs for people up here so much the better.
Done any seasonal shopping yet? All Channel m wants for Christmas is some digital spectrum please, but we’ll have to wait until the January sales to find out if we’ve got it. Securing a place on Freeview it is vital to the future of the channel so it would be nice if Ofcom, in a moment of festive revelation, recognized the absurdity of ITV pulling out of PSB and local news but getting spectrum for free, while Channel m, an organization for whom local news is a priority, has to pay for it. The sale will be conducted online in an eBay style auction – is it too late to ask for a “buy it now” option?
Finally, good luck to all those hoping to walk away with an RTS award on Saturday night. Funny how being a nominee means a lot in the Oscars - “nominated for five academy awards” - but doesn’t carry the same weight in other ceremonies where only winners seem to count. But, as every nominee at every awards ceremony since the dawn of time knows - it’s not the winning that matters, it’s the taking part. Unless of course you win!
