How-Do weekly Wrap - 15 August 2008 - Ben Swift | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 15 August 2008
Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West

Ben SwiftThe Wrap's guest editor this week is Ben Swift - Director of PSAfilms

Well, it’s been an interesting week.
ITV’s controversial money-saving plans to dismantle its regional news teams have moved a step closer this week with staff sent a list of proposed jobs that they’ll be asked to reapply for .

Having worked in Granada’s busy newsroom, I know from experience that an "on the spot" capacity and local knowledge are key to in-depth, balanced journalism.  I can only assume that with the digital TV switch-over looming, ITV is happy to let Sky and the BBC to do the "serious" news. Let’s just hope it invests the remaining budget wisely, before ITV’s reputation for quality programming becomes a thing of the past.

The Magazine saga continues . In a story with more twists and turns than your average labyrinth and a drama John Grisham would have been proud to pen, it looks like the publishers of The Magazine may finally be sorting themselves out.

The ill-fated regional glossy is allegedly relaunching in the autumn after problems with director resignations, and a communications blackout.  With rumours rife and the now-cash-strapped property developer market cutting back on advertising, it remains to be seen whether The Magazine will ever manage to get back on its feet.

In a Liverpool 08 themed stunt from agency Uniform a superlambanana has escaped into the wilds of Liverpool , with a little help from Granada Reports.  Apparently the runaway statue is said to be suffering from an identity crisis and has gone to ground, avoiding ice cream parlours, kebab shops and anywhere selling mint sauce.

And if fugitive porcelain statues wasn’t enough of a climax to the Liverpool 08 capital of culture celebrations, Liverpool-based agency Ice has announced that it has been appointed to brand the ‘World Firefighters Games’ taking place in the city later this month.

The team has its work cut out, with a brief to create a credible identity for the rather camp ‘novelty events’, ranging from Bodybuilding and Iron Dog (probably best not to ask), to the Toughest Fire Fighter Alive.

In a twist of fate, it looks like the festival of hose and helmet-laden firefighting fun looks set to coincide with Manchester’s Pride Festival sparking rumours of a mass exodus that will leave Canal Street looking like a ghost town.
