Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West.
The Wrap's guest editor this week is Steve Collins.
As the UK media becomes preoccupied with another epidemic in the form of MP
s' expenses, the last infatuation Swine Flu has been relegated to the back burner. And as the deb ate as to whether the recession is showing green or brown shoots continues we in the radio industry get on with business.
In these troubled times it’s nice to have cause for celebration so I was delighted to see RAJAR telling us last week that radio listening reached an all time high of 45.8 million adults each week in the UK; that is fantastic news. And even better is that DAB listening share is up 17%, DTV is up 4% and the internet has increased by 7%. DAB set ownership has increased once again this quarter, by 19% year on year, this is really good news for the industry as a whole.
The Sony Awards proved to be a good night out and some fantastic programmes, presenters and stations received much deserved recognition; none more so than the Gold BBC Manchester picked in the ‘Breaking News award’ and the Real Radio news team who picked up a bronze award for their excellent Rhys Jones news special.
And there were more awards for the region's media folk..... this time the Regional Press Awards. With the cheerless state of the sector at the moment it must have been a welcome respite for those who attended. The North West made a good fist of collecting a few gongs. Congratulations to the winners and nominees including ‘Photographer of the Year,’ Tim Bradley (Rochdale Observer and Heywood Advertiser) and ‘Multimedia Journalist of the Year’ Nicola Dowling (MEN) to name but two.
Also on the subject of the printed media, I was heartened to see the launch of The Bolton Independent following the earlier launches of The Bury and Cheshire Independents. Clearly they must have a cracking product to launch in these difficult times.....and while these are by no means green shoots, they certainly give one hope that some faith is returning to the business and media sector.
