How- Do.

I grew up in Southampton so I know I’ve got a lot to learn about this region.  One of the first things that struck me is the particular strength across the North of England in digital and interactive media.

There are a number of stories underscoring this over the last few days.  Here's evidence that those living in this region are amongst the most online savvy in the UK, reading the most Blogs, listening to the most podcasts and watching the most online video clips.

However, I did have all my childhood holidays in the Lake District – an area I still revere. So I was interested to learn how the Lancashire Tourist Board is looking at how social media can boost tourism. It must be a great opportunity for those in the tourism sector – one of the largest of the UK economy – to be innovating and making the most of interactive media to communicate with visitors to the region. Surely better than all those leaflets I used to collect as a child from the tourism office in Keswick?

I’m pleased to see the Guardian continues to be in the vanguard for innovation in online journalism.  They’ve got a fantastic track record and I think they’re right to create ever more local services. Local relevance is one of the attributes audiences value most highly in news. The web is the perfect medium for local news so I wish them every success in this pilot.

Finally to the brilliant Peter Kay. I love Peter Kay and I love this story. It’s another example of how talented performers are innovating and using the web to strengthen their relationship with audiences.  Peter is one of those great talents who delights the whole of the UK with his distinctive Northern warmth and humour. I really hope the BBC can play a small role in encouraging the next generation of performers from the region to find a national audience.

Richard Deverell is chief operating officer BBC North. This week Peel Media handed over the keys to the first of the BBC's buildings at Salford Quays.
