This week the news that the BBC is opening up its College of Journalism website to the public intrigued me. I know and rate the DV Talent Skillset course and it will be interesting to see how the Beeb’s venture shapes up.

I loved the story about the three short films that have been created by teenagers in the North West to discourage their peers from smoking. Generally teenagers get patronised in public awareness initiatives when the simple fact is that teenagers relate better to teenagers. The fact that they’re not being told what to do by adults is a more effective way of communicating the message. And the fact that they’re using some Hollyoaks faces…

It was so good, I had to play it three times in quick succession. I’m referring to the Durex Play ad. It looks good and it’s a simple idea. There’s no dialogue and the clever use of music gets the message across quickly and simply.

Talking about music, I class myself as a music lover, as probably most people would. I invest an awful lot of time trawling the internet in search of new bands for my iPod which usually end up on the shows that I produce. I also adore a list (and more importantly the debates they inspire) so my interest was instantly piqued when I came across the new website www.singleofthedecade.com.

Whether I'm choosing tracks for work or pleasure, music is always at its best when it's visceral - when it really makes you feel something. That's the effect I look for when I source music for a show and all of the tracks on the list arguably do that. But this is a savvy list - it's quirky, unexpected, worthy of debate - but most importantly, as it's reader voted, it's an insight into what makes the nation's hearts swell or heads bang. Now excuse me while I log on and get voting…

Sarah Dillistone is series producer/director The Season, Lime Pictures for BBC Switch
