How-Do weekly Wrap - 20 March 2009 - Gary Jenkins | Print |  Email to a friend
Friday, 20 March 2009

Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West.

The Wrap's guest editor this week is Gary Jenkins.

Last night my three year old daughter told me she needed some new “pretty pink shoes” because her purple ones “don’t match” her handbag.

You consumer agencies have got a lot to answer for. You’re obviously doing your jobs too well.

And, as if Cheshire Oaks needs any more of my hard earned money by expanding their online platform!

As an ex-hack, it’s sad that restructures, jobs cuts and a slump in advertising revenues are seeing good journalists leaving good publications.

The journalists who are feeling the impact of sweeping changes at the Manchester Evening News and its sister papers seem to be taking a stand with a no confidence vote in the Scott Trust.

I think Bethan Dorsett’s point is a valid one. Let’s hope the powers that be are not taking decisions that threaten the quality of our established and nationally well-regarded publications.

This is certainly a cause where the PR, media and marketing communities can stand shoulder to shoulder – it’s in all our interests.

We’re seeing priorities shifting from the newsroom to the chat room and some of the media big hitters are bringing in fresh blood to develop their digital and online platforms.

As the story on Richard Ayers says; “digital is one of the few areas of growth” for Trinity Mirror. But does growth necessarily mean profit - I’d be interested to know if there are any UK newspaper websites that actually make a profit?

I’ve no doubt that Bell Pottinger North’s move for Ptarmigan will turn out to be a shrewd move. Despite some recent struggles, the Leeds-based outfit are a class act.

And during these difficult times it’s good to see Chimp getting off to a good start. As a fan of the Doves from days gone by I’d travel to Manchester just to pick up a copy of the second edition.
