In their wisdom, How-Do’s erudite publishers have turned to “the sharp suited light sabre wielding one” for a review of the business scene in Manchester in 2007.
I normally hate looking back, but happily this year there have been many more highs than lows and I am genuinely confident that despite current consumer concerns, there’s a strong whiff of typical Mancunian confidence in the air as we head into 2008.
But, a look-back it is, and I will try to remind you of the most significant events of 2007.
For starters, on the event front, how about the Manchester International Festival which saw the world’s culturati flock to our own Original Modern City. Sir Howard Bernstein must have been over the moon with the outstanding response to yet another Manchester first.
On the big business front, sleeping giants Co-operative Group and United Co-ops got it together to create Europe’s biggest Co-Op powerhouse with claws in retail, banking, insurance and pharmacies. And another business merger, that of MyTravel and Thomas Cook, sadly led to a one-way ticket for many with the loss of thousands of jobs. Oh yes……and Bodycote avoided a Swiss roll by fending off a £1billion takeover from the land of the cowbell.
Here’s the plug - The outstanding MEN Media Business team broke these stories along with many other major events in the year.
In closing, this half of the Manchester Marx brothers wishes you a wonderful Christmas and a successful 2008 and remember, to quote Groucho, “Those are my principles…….if you don’t like them……………. I have others.”
