Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West.
The Wrap's guest editor this week is Mandy Leigh.
It's been a funny old week... my last few days as editor of the Stockport Express and full of highs and lows. We splashed on the heart-rending story of a man too poor to bury his dead wife, so he’s washed his hands of tradition, and left her body in a morgue. That was a bittersweet high.
Then the lows – the goodbyes to my terrific news team, who have worked so hard to produce our award-winning paper. And of course this high – the opportunity to review another exciting week of NW media news.
Meanwhile, reports that Cristiano Ronaldo has signed with Nike will warm red hearts around the region. With Real Madrid tied up with Adidas, it looks like the winker’s future is safe at Old Trafford...
Not such good news for the Bluer side of Manchester – and boy, are we blue. The richest laughing stock in football, in a year dominated, again, by our poorer neighbours. And what are they doing this week? Just gearing up for the match of all matches – while the BBC and Granada are vying to get the most reporters to Rome. Comforting then to discover I am not alone in thinking the Champions’ League is over-rated, as Beeb reporter Tony Livesey is travelling via Wembley, to see the fate of promotion hopefuls Burnley.
And finally, a real high – a reader has called to say he was so moved by our splash, he wants to pay for the dead woman’s funeral. That’s local journalism doing what it does best – serving its community for the good of the community. Hope for us all, and I’m going out smiling.
