The Weekly Wrap

Welcome to the weekly wrap from How-Do.co.uk, the website for North West media and creative industries. If you enjoy this service please forward it to a friend.

The guest editor of the launch issue of How-Do's weekly wrap is Alice Morrison, chief executive of North West Vision + Media.

Being asked to be How-Do’s first guest editor is quite an honour, so clearly I had to give some serious thought about how to approach my task.

Immediately, I decided that it was important to take a mature approach, to investigate stories that would affect my core business – TV, film and digital media.  But then, I spotted the rumours button…

Terry Christian considers his future.” Alarmed, I opened the story. Was Manchester’s very own shock-jock leaving for greener pastures? Nope, just going to drive.

Have to say, if I was a presenter I would always opt for the later show. And as for comments on his “brief tenure” well, all I know is, that last time he interviewed me, I inadvertently breached all BBC guidelines with the immortal words: “That is total bollocks!”

That’s why my heart goes out to poor old Simon O’Brien, who has resigned as breakfast DJ on BBC Radio Merseyside. Earlier this week a trailer was mistakenly broadcast in which he’s heard telling the government to go forth and multiply. It was no doubt said in jest, but now he’s paying the price.

And talking of paying the price, it looks like Harvey’s is about to. All £10million of it! That’s how much the furniture group is rumoured to be paying for the privilege of becoming the new Corrie sponsor. Deals aside, though, I’ll be intrigued to see how the advertisers try to tempt us with Harvey’s product.

Many’s the time I’ve bought a Cadbury’s calorie-bar after watching the 7.30pm trailer, but will I be similarly tempted to try the latest line in teak coffee tables?

Having said that, I’m always open to new ventures – which is why I wish the best of luck to Duncan Soutar, who has just joined Brilliant. He’s the agency’s first dedicated digital person in Manchester, reinforcing the sense of importance the digital and interactive world now has.

It’s certainly playing a huge part in our plans at Northwest Vision + Media.  That’s why we’re hosting our first Digital Academies in Manchester next month, looking to accelerate new ideas into the marketplace, and onto a screen near you. Competition for the 30 Academy places is expected to be intense, but as How-Do newsletter readers I’m happy to give you a head-start. Just go to www.digitalfuturesnw.com/academies.htm for your chance to be a digital millionaire!

Morrison has previously worked for BBC News24 as an editor and has also worked for ITN, Channel 4 and Sky News. When not working, she's up for a challenge (she says) and is currently training for the San Francisco half marathon and the Lancashire Loop bike race.
