Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West. The Wrap's guest editor this week is Natalie Gross One of my favourite stories this week was the rebirth of Woolies, albeit online - heartening for those of us who lament for less complicated times - though I'm not sure how I'm going to buy my pick n mix online!
All change for regional media as the proposed co-operation between the BBC and ITV gains momentum despite the calls from the NUJ to stop any move which would have a negative impact on reporting and the regionals themselves. Add that to the news of some of the small boys going bang - Abbey FM - the recently announced merging of Trinity’s North West and Wales operations; constant business reengineering of Johnston Press; and launch of another lifestyle magazine and it's going to be interesting to see how the regional space pans out. While we are seeing regional players come and go, clearly convergence of regional web, radio and mags beckons. I'd back one of the big radio stations to take a lead as they're best positioned to do so if they've got the appetite. In the face of recession there were a lot of stories this week about investment and account pick ups. The high profile recruitment of the Media City boss sends out very strong intent about, yes, the size of the task ahead, but also the scale of the ambition. Also on the infrastructure side was another announcement of expansion…personally, I’m excited to be moving into new premises that were once inhabited by SAW and their prodigies - sad but true!
Also, congratulations to Katie and Paul on their award for Treasuremytext - a service with true utility that allows users to save, now automatically, texts to their web based service. Let's hope security on the site is up to scratch - I for one have far too many texts that can get me into trouble!
Finally it has also been a week of hellos and goodbyes as we welcome Arif Ansari back to the North West but sadly we also say farewell to Tim Grundy, Phil Easton and Jim Whittingham. Natalie Gross is Managing Partner at Amaze
