Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West. The Wrap's guest editor this week is Gary Frielick. May I start this Wrap by wishing this year's entrants of the North West Newspapers Awards the very best of luck. The event takes place in Chester on the 19th of June.
Having started my career at the Halifax Evening Courier, I am a passionate supporter of regional press and believe it plays a very important role in our communities. 2.9m people agree with me because that's how many still read a regional/weekly newspaper in the North West!
The Telegraph has shown how a powerful news story can significantly increase sales in a world of fragmented media channels. In the last three weeks, we have seen our sales increase by more than a million. With this in mind, I see no reason why regional newspapers can’t follow suit by breaking local exclusives so strong that every competitor TV station, radio station and rival newspaper can only follow.
So my challenge to our regional editors is thus. Show us your editorial courage and skill. Take full advantage of press’s new-found popularity and follow the Telegraph’s lead in taking the press out of depressing!
FROM ROCHDALE TO HULL WITH LOVE - NOT!
I was flabbergasted to see that Rochdale Borough Council have given their £70k re-branding budget to Thinking Place Ltd in Hull! (what were THEY thinking!)
There were 13 tenders for the business and despite the wealth of creative talent in this region, they decided an agency 88 miles away from Cyril Smith's hometown were more capable to do this!
BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT
I notice that the 'child star' Hollie Steele from BGT fame is still making the news on the basis that there were hundreds of complaints to the industry regulator .
Fifty complainants were concerns for her welfare and 281 complained she shouldn't have got another chance to sing! Having seen the final, I have now applied for next year's show along with my three-legged mongrel. We are going to re-enact a Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire dance routine that's bound to get millions of sympathy votes!
Gary Frielick is Regional Sales Director-Display for the Telegraph Media Group .
