Welcome to the weekly Wrap from How-Do - media news for the North West.

There’s plenty of news bouncing around about how campaigns focusing on social networking and new media are all the rage. I was fascinated by Staniforth’s campaign about the new England manager on that Bookface malarkey. But I couldn’t click through because for technical reasons we can’t access Facebook at work. Or My Space. Some workplaces have banned access because staff mess about all day long.

But the gladrag award season is upon us all. The Northern Journalism Awards was a friendly event. Greg Dyke, the man whose idea it was to move bits of the BBC to the North said he was pleased but added: “I wouldn’t have gone to Salford. It’s a desert. This was about getting the BBC into city centres, where the people are.”

I hosted the annual CIPR Pride Awards this week . All told it was a privilege and a pressure. Last year the host was Tony Wilson and he was one of the best events hosts there has ever been. It was a nice touch by Dave Sanders getting everyone to join in a minute’s applause.

You can never underestimate the delight someone feels in getting a perspex pyramid. Big proud winners on the night were IBP, who seem to be encroaching on the established order of the Manchester big three – big because of the awards they win – and they being Spin, Tangerine and Brazen.

Other winners were Cumbria County Council and Stockport Borough Council's PR teams. Stockport seemed to spend more time on the stage than me, winning as they did for a series of campaigns telling kids not to dive into murky water. It's the kind of story local communities respond to, but which top Scouse blogger Dougal Paver would probably slate as "nanny state gone mad".

They've also got their work cut out in Stockport at the moment as a row over transparent blue bin bags has become a hot local issue in Stockport and the story is now being picked up by the nationals, as it throws up major issues of privacy, recycling and council efficiency.

And do you know where this snowballing story started? A blog. This blog in fact. In Marple. Might be something in all this blogging and new media lark after all.
