Manchester International Festival reception cancelled in favour of Prince Edward | Print |  Email to a friend
Monday, 02 July 2007
How-Do understands that the drinks reception planned for Manchester Town Hall tomorrow evening to launch the premiere of “The Pianist”, has been cancelled because Prince Edward has decided to make an unscheduled visit to the city to see Pete Postlethwaite perform in the Tempest at the Royal Exchange.

A dinner at the Royal Exchange in the Prince’s honour has been hastily arranged instead by the city powers.

Sponsors are understood to have mixed feelings about the cancellation.

On the one hand they are surprised and delighted that Edward is evidently a big fan of Postlethwaite – and maybe even Shakespeare….however, they are also irritated that having forked out substantial sums to sponsor the Festival, they have now been forced to contact their clients at the last minute to inform them the reception is off.

“The Pianist” is an original piece of work based on Wladyslaw Szpilman’s memoirs of the Warsaw ghetto during the Nazi occupation and the Festival organisers viewed the reception as a key event in the sponsors’ benefits package.

The Festival has worked hard over the past year to negotiate sponsorship packages from several leading companies including Bruntwood, United Utilities, Virgin Trains and Sony Playstation.

Without the sponsors’ support the festival’s ability to deliver the quality of production required to ensure the festival’s international reputation for excellence and originality, would certainly have been compromised.

One of those affected by the cancellation told How-Do that it was “galling to have been treated in this offhand manner when a minor royal decides to pay a visit.”

Bought a dictionary did we Giles?

First of all you patently haven't got a magazine to insult.

Secondly you have no claim to slander, as slander is spoken and libel as written.

And believe me there is nothing libellous in anything I have said about Chump magazine. I think the "Fair Comment" defence clearly applies.

Nimrod was the great hunter, a nom de plume I've off and on used since University days - largely because I believe it sounds amusing. A BBC Radio comedy series has adopted the same name for similar reasons.

Making comments on my own articles - really? This I would love to see. Responses maybe, then under my own name. Get real kiddo.

As to my writing not being that popular... Well, I suppose in certain circles maybe not, I've always had a tendency to lambaste obvious pricks wherever I found them and to celebrate genuine quality where that could be found also.

I love statements such as "we've all got the measure of what type of hack you are" implying a level of popular support for yourself and your spurious magazine which has never manifested itself on this site.

As to you "used to edit "wank" mags didn't you?" Incorrect. I was photo-editor of a wank mag for two years ("Mayfair in the late eighties when it was the 25th largest selling ABC'd title in the UK).

I'm sure I remember your name from a subscription resquest at the time.

And, oh yes, it was all spelt wrong...
