Rumours are circulating that MEN Media has won the contest to publish Network Rail’s proposed new daily pm/evening freesheet which will be distributed at Piccadilly station. The Metro is distributed at the station in the mornings.
Tender submissions were due at the end of June and an announcement was expected late last month.
It is understood that News International, publisher of ‘The London paper’ and the registered owner of the title ‘The Manchester paper’ did not ultimately submit a bid for the contract because the anticipated footprint of around 10,000 copies a day wasn’t commercially viable. How-Do raised this issue when the news was initially announced. An exec at NI was quoted as saying a separate launch in Manchester would not be ruled out.
PJ Taylor, a spokesman at Network Rail told How-Do he could not comment on the rumours and said a full and proper announcement would be made in the next few days. Last month the number of free copies of the MEN picked up overtook the number of paid-for copies of the paper. It is not known whether the MEN bid simply extends its free offering to Piccadilly or envisages a new and separate product.
